MAKHADO: The death toll in the fire that burnt buildings at the Kutama-Sinthumule Correctional Centre has risen to three.

This after two more prisoners succumbed to their injuries in hospital on Thursday.

This brings the death toll to three, after Jeffrey Radebe, who was serving a life sentence for murder, died on the day of the blaze.

The maximum prison, based in Makhado in the Vhembe District caught fire last week after inmates allegedly set parts of the prison alight after certain demands to prison management were not addressed.

Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Ronald Lamola visited the facility on Thursday to assess the extent of the damage.

‘As of 17th August,  2 436 inmates have been moved from Kutama-Sinthumule Correctional Centre in Makhado to safe zones after the blaze,’ said Minister Lamola.

The total cost of the damage has not been determined.
