STRYDOM TUNNEL-The R36 near Strydom Tunnel has been partially closed following a severe accident that occurred on Friday night.
A truck, reportedly traveling at high speed, lost control and fell sideways onto a VW City Golf, leaving the area littered with debris and diesel.
The collision was catastrophic, with four individuals sustaining critical injuries. Among those injured are all three occupants of the City Golf and one passenger from the truck.
Emergency services were quick to respond, and the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care.
However, the aftermath of the accident took an unexpected turn as local community members and passing motorists began looting the scene.
With diesel spilled across the road, many were seen siphoning fuel from the overturned truck, while others took advantage of the chaos to grab the boxes of oranges that were being transporting.
This opportunistic behavior has sparked concerns over public safety and the potential for further accidents in the area.
Authorities are urging motorists to avoid the R36 near Strydom Tunnel as cleanup operations continue. The area remains hazardous due to the large amounts of diesel on the road, posing a significant risk of further accidents.
An investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing, and authorities have yet to release the identities of those involved.
The community is being called upon to refrain from looting and to allow emergency services to conduct their work safely.
Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes and to exercise extreme caution if travel in the area is unavoidable.
