GA-MAPHALLE -Several schools in Mopani District have brought to the fore the growing concern of multiple learners callapsing on school premises during lessons.

These unprecedented occurrences have spread so widely prompting parents to call for spiritual intervention.

A similar incident occurred in Modisha Secondary School in Ga-Maphalle village on Friday, February 17. It is said that girls started screaming at once while others cried and collapsed as if they were possessed by a spirit during assembly. Thus, lessons were brought to a halt.

“What happened at school today is shocking. This has been happening since schools reopened but today it just blew up. Today was worse than the other times because half of the girls were affected. We had to protest to get the school to act”, a learner said.

In a recent incident, Modubatse high school in Greater Letaba stopped operating after girl learners reportedly started screaming, collapsing and crying uncontrollably on Thursday.

Professional Educators Union Provincial Chairperson Gladwin Mabotja said that spiritual intervention is required to mitigate the scourge.

“Schools belong to the SGB. They must facilitate daily devotion at assembly with a priest present. The affected learners must also get professional psychological assessment. Social workers must be deployed to the schools”, Mabotja emphasized.

The school SGB could not be reached for comment when contacted
