Cholera outbreak hits Sekgosese area in Greater Letaba

KGAPANE-The Department of Health, Kgapane Hospital has released a communique cautioning local chiefs, indunas, councillors, and the general public within Greater Letaba Municipality of a cholera outbreak in Sekgosese, Mamaila village and Thabanatshwana.

The patients are said to have attended a funeral in Hammanskraal where it is suspected they contracted the disease.

The hospital’s community liaison officer Ivy Modiba, thus, urged residents to exercise basic hygiene such as washing of hands with soap regularly, keeping toilets clean, making water safe and preparing safe food.

The department has also started cholera health education awareness at malls, taxi ranks, and clinics.

Cholera is a bacterial infection that spreads through contaminated water.

The Cholera death toll in South Africa has risen to 26. That’s after one more person died of the bacteria in Hammanskraal.

The area north of Pretoria is the epicentre of the outbreak, with 29 deaths.The Free State and Mpumalanga have recorded one death each.

Authorities are yet to find the source of the outbreak, despite dozens of water samples being tested.
