FAIRLANDS – On Monday, Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube celebrated South Africa’s top 39 matric achievers at a special ceremony in Fairlands, Johannesburg.

These exceptional students, representing every corner of the country, were honored for their outstanding performance in the 2024 matriculation examinations. The event highlighted not only their academic success but also their perseverance and dedication throughout a challenging year.

One of the star performers, Malwandle Baloyi, hailing from New Hope School in Pretoria, was Gauteng’s top achiever. Baloyi attributes her success to the unwavering support of her siblings, who consistently reassured her that, regardless of the outcome, they would be proud of her. “I prioritised my studies during the matric year, but having my family’s encouragement made all the difference,” Baloyi shared. Her dedication and discipline earned her a top spot among the nation’s brightest students.

Maselesele Lalamani, a top performer from a Quintile 2 school, was overjoyed when she received the news of her achievement. “I told my father, and he was just so happy. He immediately started organizing everything to celebrate,” Lalamani said. With a passion for astronomy, she plans to study at the University of Cape Town (UCT). “I want to pursue astronomy and contribute to understanding the mysteries of the universe,” she added, speaking with enthusiasm about her future aspirations.

Sbusiso Buthelezi, a standout student from Zimele High School in KwaZulu-Natal, was equally elated by his success as the top achiever in Quintile 3. “Words can’t fully express how I feel, but I am super happy,” he said. Buthelezi offered advice to the class of 2025: “Treat it as a marathon. Put in the work early, and the results will show.” His plans for the future involve pursuing actuarial sciences at the University of Cape Town, a field he’s passionate about.

The top 39 performers were recognized not only for their impressive academic achievements but also for their resilience in the face of the demands of matric. The official results for the 2024 matric exams will be broadcast live on SABC News tonight at 18h00, marking the culmination of months of hard work and dedication for students across the country.

These top achievers are a testament to the power of discipline, support, and perseverance, and they serve as an inspiration for future generations of South African learners. The ceremony was a fitting recognition of their exceptional efforts and a celebration of their bright futures.
