Bangaladeshi hitchhiker (41) robbed of R37k in Tzaneen

TZANEEN: The Police in Tzaneen say they are investigating a case of robbery after a hitchhiker was robbed of R37 800, grocery stock worth R4 000, clothes and cellphones on the R71 Sasol Garage yesterday.

Tzaneen communications officer Sergeant Maurice Nkhwashu said that a 41-year-old Bangladeshi national was hitchhiking in Tzaneen R71 road near Sasol garage to Phalaborwa when a blue sedan with three African males offered him a ride.

Along the way whilst still in Tzaneen one of the occupants of the car took out a knife and ordered the Bangladeshi national to bend down then he put his leg on his neck.

It is further alleged that the victim was told not to move or try anything stupid or else he will be shot.

Whilst the car was still in motion the assailants search the victim and took R300 in cash, they also took two cellphones and demanded bank pin codes then they transferred R30 000(thirty thousand rands) and R5000-00 (five thousand rands) into their account.

The victim was dropped off somewhere on the Nkowankowa policing area.

They went on to further withdraw R6800-00(six thousand eight hundred rands) and R2500-00(two thousand rands).

They also drove away with the victim’s bag of clothes plus a stock which he bought for his shop worth R4000-00(four thousand rands).

A case was opened at Tzaneen saps and investigation is underway.
