TZANEEN- The Balobedu Royal Council has voiced strong disapproval of the upcoming Mzansi Magic series “Queen Modjadji,” scheduled to debut on July 14, 2024.
The Council asserts that the series’ producers, including acclaimed poet and producer Duma ka Ndlovu, failed to consult them before developing the show, which is inspired by the legendary Balobedu rainmaker, the first Queen Modjadji.
MultiChoice and Ka Ndlovu describe the series as an opportunity for viewers to engage with Lobedu culture and traditions, portraying how Queen Modjadji historically managed to bring rain. Despite these claims, the Royal Council insists that neither MultiChoice nor the producers sought their input or approval.
“It is crucial that any representation of our cultural heritage is accurate, respectful, and involves thorough consultation and consent from the Balobedu Royal Council and recognition of Her Majesty, Rain Queen Masalanabo Modjadji,” the Royal Council stated on Sunday, April 10.
The Council emphasized that Queen Masalanabo Modjadji will not tolerate any distortion or commercial exploitation of her history. They stressed the importance of proper dialogue with the Balobedu Royal Council to ensure the series accurately reflects their heritage and honors the significant role of the Rain Queens.
MultiChoice had previously issued a press release in February, claiming they conducted extensive research and consultations with key stakeholders, tribal leaders, and academic experts before scripting and casting the series.
“Queen Modjadji” is set to air on Mzansi Magic’s prime Sunday night slot at 8 pm
