TZANEEN-A baby girl abandoned in the toilets at the Tzaneen Taxi Rank on Thursday, November 14, is reportedly in good health and receiving care at Van Velden Hospital in Tzaneen. Her mother, who admitted to leaving the infant behind, is also receiving medical attention and undergoing a mental health assessment under police supervision.

The shocking discovery was made by a taxi operator, Shoketso Leshabane, who heard the baby crying in the toilet. Initially dismissing it as routine, he investigated further when the cries grew louder. Using a torch, he located the baby under a washing sink and immediately contacted the police.

Authorities swiftly intervened, taking the baby to Van Velden Hospital, where family members later recognized her clothing and alerted the police. The mother was located after the story gained traction on social media.

Mopani district police communication officer, Const Khomotso Hlokwe, confirmed that the young mother admitted to abandoning her baby in a statement made to the police. “Whether she will be formally arrested or not will depend on the outcome of her mental health evaluation,” Hlokwe stated.

Hospital insiders have reported that the mother is consulting with a social worker and is receiving the necessary support. The baby girl is described as safe, healthy, and well cared for at the hospital.

The incident has sparked widespread discussion, highlighting the need for mental health support and awareness about challenges faced by vulnerable young mothers. Authorities continue to monitor the situation while ensuring both the baby and her mother receive the care they need.
