BA-PHALABORWA- There was joy when five top achievers were given awards by Ba Phalaborwa Municipality Mayor, Cllr Merriam Malatji for their outstanding performance during the 2020 matric results. The prize-giving took place at the Municipal council chamber on Friday, March 05.
These five pupils were chosen by the Mayor (Mayor’s choice) from destitute families and schools that are struggling with matric results, identified by the Department of Education.
The Mayor, during her message of support, said the Municipality has decided to lend a helping hand and assist a few families financially in any way possible. “We expect young people here to take the opportunity given to them seriously. Education is one of the pillars of society and we have been working hard to encourage our young people in our communities to invest in education to change their situation at home” she said.
She added that “2020 was a difficult year and to have excelled the way that most of you have done is a sign of commitment, dedication, and a clear understanding of what you want. All of you here today are identified not only based on your performance at school but also based on the vulnerable situation that you face at home”.
