RITA VILLAGE-Maake police in Greater Tzaneen, warn the general public to beware of scammers that are allegedly targeting people at ATMs of Maake shopping centre and robbing them of their money.
According to the police, these incidents become increasingly popular, particularly during this time of the year.
In a recent incident, a woman allegedly robbed four thousand rands(R4000) at one of the ATMs earlier this morning. It is reported that the victim was approached by three men who managed to rob her of money she had just withdrawn. Two of the suspects managed to flee the scene while the third suspect was apprehended by the mob and assaulted.
It is reported further that a group of men wearing balaclavas arrived in two cars, a VW polo and an orange vehicle believed to be getaway cars and managed to escape with the suspects after threatening patrons with two police officers who were already on the scene.
Sources at the scene revealed that this is the second incident in recent weeks.
The suspect who was attacked by the mob is said to have been transported to the nearest hospital for medical assessment. Maake police are investigating the incident.
