MOHLABANENG VILLAGE – The police in Bolobedu arrested a 23- year-old man for the alleged rape of an 8-year old girl in Mohlabaneng Village, on Friday, September 04.
It is alleged the suspect attacked the victim, who is a grade 3 learner at Mohlabaneng Primary School on Monday, August 31, proceeded to sexually violate her, and stabbed her multiple times. The victim sustained serious injuries from the stab wounds and is recovering in the hospital.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed that a suspect was apprehended on charges of rape and attempted murder. He is due to appear in court on Monday.
MEC of Education in Limpopo Polly Boshielo expressed her concern and shock at the incident “As a department, we are deeply saddened and shocked by this incident and condemn it in the strongest of terms. Learners deserve protection wherever they are, inside and outside the school” said MEC Boshielo
She further added that the department has sent psycho-social professionals to the family and the school to offer necessary counseling.
She urged the people to work together to ensure that women and children are safe in and outside their homes.
It is understood that statistics indicate a growing number of such cases that are reported daily, therefore people are calling for severe punishment such as the death penalty to be brought back in instances where the evidence is overwhelming against the perpetrators.
