MARIVENI- The African Freedom Party (AFP)’s General Secretary and a known community leader Elvis Mathebula was shot and killed at Mariveni village outside Nkowankowa township, in Greater Tzaneen on Thursday night.
Elvis Mathebula popularly known as ‘Majika’ was shot several times behind the ear by unknown assailants at around 19h17, on Wednesday night and was found to be already clinically dead upon the arrival of professional medical assistance.
According to a close source, Mathebula allegedly received a call on Thursday from a person who wanted to buy a portion of land and requested a meeting with him at the scene where he was gunned down.
It said that Majika was serving as an induna or village representative in the village under Maake Royal authority, a role which saw him being involved in loggerheads with others, more especially in the sale of the portions of land.
AFP leader & Greater Tzaneen Municipality PR Councillor Ronny Shai said is saddened by the murder of his party’s general secretary and further called upon the community members to assist with the arrests of those responsible.
” We are calling upon members of the community who might have information that could assist the police to come forward so that those that are responsible can be arrested”
