MUSINA-“The dysfunctional state of the Beitbfidge Border Post between South Africa and Zimbabwe, where the Border Management Authority (BMA) was hastily launched without receiving adequate funding or the transfer of relevant personnel, is emblematic of the lack of political will to tackle porous borders in South Africa,” said actions a President Herman Mashaba.
This comes after the recently upgraded fence that separates South Africa from its immediate neighbour Zimbabwe, has been in a”dysfunctional” state.
Thus, vulnerable communities bare the brunt of illegal immigrants who commit crimes such as selling counterfeit goods, drug smuggling, corruption etc, which could potentially bring the country’s economy to it’s knees.
Political parties that have visited the embattled facility such as Action SA say that the deployment of 200 border guards has proven to be a futile exercise because “inefficiency and corruption”continue unabated.
“Beit bridge requires lasting solutions. The Border Management Authority (BMA)delegated to five identified sites of the border was hastily launched without receiving adequate funding or the transfer of relevant personel. “,Mashaba added.
