A 25-year-old man sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for rape and attempted rape

POLOKWANE:  Modimolle Regional Court has sentenced Jappie Enock Matjila aged 25 to ten years imprisonment for rape and attempted rape of two women aged 35 and 42 in separate incidents, that took place during July and November 2022, in Alma village at Rankin’s Pass policing precinct.

On 29 July 2022 at around 01:00, a 42-year-old woman was walking home at Alma RDP, when the accused grabbed, and threatened her before raping her alongside the gravel road.

In another incident, that occurred on 07 November 2022, the victim aged 35, was coming from a local tavern at Alma village, when she met the accused who threatened her with a knife trying to rape her. Fortunately, the victim managed to escape.

In both incidents, victims opened cases of rape at Rankin’s Pass police station. Sergeant Benny Koenaite of Modimolle FCS was assigned cases for further investigation.

The suspect was traced and arrested the same day on 07 November 2022. It was also found that the accused was on bail for rape committed on 29 July 2022 at Alma RDP.

He was sentenced as follows: 10 years imprisonment for rape, 06 years imprisonment for attempted rape,10 years plus 6 years Sentences will run concurrently.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has applauded the arresting team and investigating officer for keeping the rapists off our streets and ensuring that victims receive justice.
