POLOKWANE – Three children lost their lives in a tragic road accident on the N1-26 at Ysterberg on Sunday, 11 January, after an unknown vehicle allegedly overtook on a barrier line, causing a chain collision before fleeing the scene.

According to reports, a Haval SUV and a VW sedan were travelling in the same direction when an unknown vehicle attempted to overtake on a barrier line. In an effort to avoid a collision, the Haval SUV swerved and collided head-on with a Toyota sedan travelling in the opposite direction.

The impact caused the VW sedan to crash into the Toyota sedan. The unknown vehicle allegedly fled the scene immediately after the collision.

The accident claimed the lives of the female driver of the Toyota sedan and three children who were travelling with her. The driver of the VW sedan sustained critical injuries, while the driver of the Haval SUV suffered minor injuries.

Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, has strongly condemned the reckless behaviour that led to the fatal crash.

“We are appalled by this senseless tragedy and condemn the driver’s reckless behaviour. We call on the police to leave no stone unturned in tracking down this cowardly driver,” said MEC Mathye.

The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has extended its heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Police investigations are ongoing, and a manhunt has been launched for the driver who fled the scene.
