50-year-old man arrested for assaulting a teenage boy ‘over salt’

GROBERSDAL- A 50-year-old man who allegedly assaulted a 16-year-old boy while pointing him with a firearm at one of the food outlets at Groblersdal Game Center yesterday, June 15 at about 18:30 has been arrested.

It is alleged that the teenage boy had asked the man to pass him the salt after buying food which erupted into an argument over who should use the seasoning first.

The argument which reportedly turned violent and was captured on the video that went viral, broke out after the victim and his cousin allegedly wanted to use the same seasoning as the suspect. The suspect then became furious and started assaulting the teenager while pointing him with a firearm

The other shoppers watched helplessly as the suspect assaulted the boy until he eventually left him lying on the ground.

The victim was later taken to hospital and was later discharged. Following the incident, cases of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and pointing of a firearm were opened.

The suspect was arrested today, 16 June 2022 at about 10:00 following an intensive investigation by the local police.

The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has commended the swift arrest of a suspect.

“We will not tolerate incidents of gender-based violence and attacks on our children and we will ensure that justice prevails for the victim. In the meantime, we urge community members to remain calm and allow us space to deal with the matter, ” Concluded Lieutenant General Hadebe.

The suspect will appear before the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court on Friday 17 June 2022, facing charges of Assault GBH and pointing of a firearm.
