POLOKWANE – The Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment, and Tourism (LEDET) has confirmed that a total of 484 foreign nationals have applied for Spaza Shop licenses in the province.
This is part of the ongoing registration process that has been in effect since 14 November 2024. The deadline for the registration window is 28 February 2025.
Since June 2024, the department has received a substantial number of applications, with over 5,700 applications submitted for Spaza Shop registration.
Of these, 4,426 applications have already been approved, reflecting strong participation from local business owners in the registration process.
The department has noted that 484 of these applications come from foreign nationals who are operating Spaza Shops across various municipalities in Limpopo.
Local municipalities have been designated as licensing centers, where business owners have been able to apply for their licenses in a streamlined and organized process.
LEDET has praised the cooperation between local businesses and registration officials, which has contributed to a smooth registration experience.
The department is confident that all registered Spaza Shop owners will continue to fulfill their obligations, which include maintaining proper documentation and keeping accurate records of stock sold within their premises.
In light of the registration initiative, LEDET has issued a warning regarding unlicensed Spaza Shops in the province.
As of 1 March 2025, all Spaza Shops that have not completed the registration process will be required to close down their operations immediately.
The department has stressed that only licensed Spaza Shops, or those with proof of pending applications, will be allowed to continue operating.
This move is part of LEDET’s broader strategy to regulate and streamline the informal business sector, ensuring that all Spaza Shops operate legally and comply with the necessary regulations.
The department has encouraged business owners to complete their applications before the deadline to avoid the risk of closure.
With the registration period closing on 28 February 2025, the department is urging both local and foreign Spaza Shop owners to act quickly in order to avoid disruptions to their businesses.
The registration process is seen as an important step in formalizing the informal sector and ensuring that all business owners operate within the law.
In summary, foreign nationals have shown strong participation in the Spaza Shop registration process, with 484 applications submitted so far.
As the deadline approaches, LEDET has warned that any unlicensed Spaza Shops will be shut down from 1 March 2025. This initiative is crucial in regulating the sector and ensuring that all Spaza Shop owners are compliant with the law.
