PHALABORWA– In a harrowing incident that has left the community in shock, 28-year-old Hanno Steinberg has been remanded in custody without bail for allegedly stabbing his aunt, Magdelene Hurst (51), to death.
The incident occurred at Hurst’s home in Phalaborwa after Steinberg was reportedly chased out of the house due to uncalled-for behaviour.
Limpopo Police Spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba provided details of the tragic event, stating that Steinberg, who had previously lived with the family, entered his aunt’s house and found her lying on the couch. In a brutal attack, he stabbed her with a knife.
Colonel Ledwaba recounted the victim’s father’s desperate attempt to rescue her, explaining that while Hurst tried to run outside for safety, Steinberg overpowered both her and her father, stabbing Hurst multiple times. The severity of the attack left the community in shock and mourning.
Steinberg has been charged with murder and remains in custody. The case has highlighted the devastating impact of familial violence and the importance of addressing underlying behavioral issues to prevent such tragedies.
As the investigation continues, the community of Phalaborwa mourns the loss of Magdelene Hurst, a beloved family member whose life was cut short by a senseless act of violence.
