BOKSBURG – The Ekurhuleni EMS has confirmed that 16 people have died of suspected gas inhalation at the Angelo informal settlement in Boksburg on Wednesday night.
Authorities have revised the gas leak death toll from 24 to 16.
Nitrate oxide was believed to have leaked from a gas cylinder used by the illegal miners (zama-zamas) who operate from a shack in the informal settlement.
According to one Ekurhuleni EMS officer, women and children were among the dead with their bodies scattered in different parts of the settlement close to where the leak emerged from.
